About Us

The History Of The Buffalo Riders

Founded in 1997, our African-American equestrian team honors and keeps alive the contribution of the Buffalo Soldiers and the Black Cowboys of the Old West, Lest We Forget, Lest We Forget. There are a number of female riders on the team as well.

We are very community oriented in working with inner city youth in teaching them all aspects of horsemanship.

During the Christmas Holiday, we deliver toys and other items to the inner city neighborhoods.

We have an annual parade of horses in February through the City of Portsmouth, VA in memory of The Buffalo Soldiers and the Black Cowboys.

We also participate in other holiday parades.

We give lectures at schools, churches, military bases, etc., on the history of the Buffalo Soldier.

We have had TV appearances on the 700 Club with Pat Robinson, as well as other TV talk shows and radio shows.

Some of our members were extras in the made for TV movie, “Sally Hemings An American Scandal”.
